New TRICARE Program Begins

Fall 2004

The new TRICARE Retail Pharmacy (TRRx) program recently was launched, increasing accessibility to TRICARE resources for program beneficiaries.

TRRx consolidates 53,000 civilian pharmacies from various regions into one uniform network with a centralized claims processing unit. Beneficiaries no longer have to mail pharmacy claims to multiple sites for processing or call various telephone numbers to get assistance filling a prescription when using the retail network. Also, beneficiaries traveling outside of their designated TRICARE region are no longer required to pay full prescription prices when filling a prescription or file a TRICARE claim to get reimbursed for these out-of-pocket expenses. Pharmacy co-payments – $3 for generic or $9 for brand-name – are the same in every location where TRRx is available.

To use the new program, as with all other DoD health programs, beneficiaries must be enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). To locate a network pharmacy, visit the TRICARE pharmacy locator service on the Express Scripts Web site (www.express-scripts.com/TRICARE) or call 866-363-8779.
