'Military One Source' A Winner

Winter 2004-05

The Defense Department has established a "one-stop" place to go whenever or wherever military members (including Guard and Reserves) or their families need quick, professional assistance with almost anything from routine problems to life’s most complicated situations.

The new "Military One Source" is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. "It’s a place where, no matter when the situation occurs, the military family member could make a phone call or go on the Internet and begin to get some help," according to John Molino, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy.

Military One Source runs the gamut of situations, from needing a plumber in the middle of the night to fix a broken pipe to needing veterinary service for a sick pet. It is an especially useful resource for anyone who has just arrived at a new duty station, handling things like helping families find childcare or information about schools and summer jobs – whatever is needed.

When someone calls Military One Source for help, the person answering the phone will have at least a master’s degree in social work or some kind of counseling service, Molino says. "That person is trained specifically to deal with military issues – issues that complicate military life."

The toll-free number for callers in the U.S. is 1-800-342-9647. Most international callers also have a toll-free number, 1-800-3429-6477 (you will also need the country code). Or go online to access information or e-mail a consultant at www.militaryonesource.com (user ID: military; password: onesource).
