Summer 2004
For military wives putting on a few pounds, stress may be the cause!
Stress and military life are practically inseparable, and this constant stress can lead to abdominal weight gain. It’s because of a hormone called cortisol, a chemical responsible for helping people flee from stressful situations. In the military, fleeing is not an option, so cortisol levels build up. This can make you feel hungry, even when you’re not – especially for sugary and carbohydrate-rich foods. Cortisol can even elevate blood pressure and the heart rate.
But since avoiding stress is nearly impossible, it’s best to try to decease the body’s release of cortisol. Moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, along with adequate sleep and a healthy, reasonable diet can significantly lower cortisol levels. Dietary supplements also can help, including a multivitamin, calcium, vitamin C and green tea extract.
During periods of separation, keep a routine of cooking and eating regular meals – but eat healthy foods. Avoid too much caffeine, nicotine and alcohol because they can create cycles of stress and fatigue.
