Spring 2005
You have probably heard of "phishing" scams, which trick people into providing personal information through a return e-mail or by luring them to a phony corporate website.
The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) wants its customers to know that the agency and its web-based system, myPay, never asks for personal or financial information by e-mail. Individual customers enter the myPay website with a PIN to access the secure financial page and make changes to personal information.
Never respond to an e-mail or pop-up message that asks for personal or financial information. If you want to make a transaction through the website of a legitimate organization, look for indicators that the site is secure, such as the lock icon on the browser's status bar or a URL for a website that begins "https". Use anti-virus software and keep it up to date.
Note: The DFAS public website has changed its address to www.dod.mil/dfas.
